MD Helicopters, Inc., confirmed a new helicopter order during the Helitech exhibition recently in Duxford, UK.

UK-based Medical Aviation Services (MAS) has ordered one twin-engine MD Explorer for the Great North Air Ambulance. MAS (the MDHI distributor for aeromedical helicopters in the UK, based at Staverton in Gloucestershire) will take delivery of the helicopter next autumn and will completely outfit the single-engine IFR-capable aircraft for emergency medical service work.

Great North Air Ambulance currently operates from bases in Teeside and Blythe. Its purchase of this first MD Explorer is part of a comprehensive upgrade and expansion programme that will include replacement of its existing BO 105 and AS 355 helicopters.

“The aircraft has been well received for aeromedical work because of its safety features, low noise and large cabin size,” MD Helicopters told www.air-rescuetek.com. “In addition, the MD Explorer meets the industry’s most stringent safety standards, with FAA and JAA certification for single-pilot, Category A IFR operations. Only MD Helicopters feature the patented NOTAR system for anti-torque control.”

The Luxembourg National Police also recently ordered a twin-engine MD Explorer. The aircraft, slated for delivery in the second quarter of 2004, will complement the fleet of MD Explorers operated by Luxembourg Air Rescue. The sale is being made through Helifly, MDHI’s long-time distributor in Belgium.
